Stormwater Management

Stormwater Utility Feasibility Study
Presented at the Jan. 25, 2010 Government Services meeting: Read the study

The City of St. Charles has a Stormwater Management code. The purpose of this code is to keep rainwater and snow-melt water out of homes and business and to enhance local surface water quality. The Sewer Division maintains storm sewers by inspecting and cleaning them of debris. The most secure location for stormwater that cannot be immediately transported by storm sewers is in the street. The streets in St. Charles are specifically designed to contain and route stormwater overflow.

What can residents do to help?

1.     Keep leaves, grass and trash from blocking storm sewer inlets near your home.

2.   Do not dump grease, oil, or other liquid waste down storm sewers. These drains flow directly into rivers and streams, so material flowing through them is not treated prior.

3.   Apply lawn and garden chemicals sparingly and according to directions. A heavy rainfall can wash excess chemicals into the storm sewers and, ultimately, polluting the Fox River.

4.   Take your car to a commercial car wash facility. Washing cars on driveways or streets means that the cleaning products will flow directly into the storm sewers or ditches and into nearby streams, lakes, and rivers. Using a commercial car wash facility will ensure that the water and pollutants go to a treatment facility before entering local water bodies.
