Arbor Day Essay Contest: The Most Beautiful Tree
Share your story! Entries of 300 words or less due April 1, 2010.

It is without question that trees are among the most beautiful additions to this grand city of ours as well as the fact that St. Charles is celebrating 12 years as a member of Tree City, USA.

Tree City USA® is a program offered by the Arbor Day Foundation (Arborday.org) that helps communities protect and enhance their forestry programs. In recognition of Arbor Day 2010 and to celebrate our cities beautiful trees, the St. Charles Tree Commission is asking residents to write a short note about what trees mean to them.

Do you have a favorite tree, a tree that reminds you of a loved one or a tree named in honor of those who have already gone? Do your children love to play under an old oak, or is your deck under the outstretched limbs of sycamore or maple. While we may not think about it everyday, trees are an important part of our lives and community.

By taking a moment to share your story about your special you are helping to improve the awareness of all the benefits that trees offer.

Please provide your ideas by email to isoderlind@stcharlesil.gov or by letter to Isabel Soderlind, City of St. Charles-Public Works, 2 E. Main St., St. Charles, IL 60174 by April 1, 2010 in 300 words or less. Photos are welcomed but optional. The Commissioners will select the top entry for the prize and the winner will be announced at the Arbor Day Celebration, April 30, 2010, at 4:00 p.m. in Lincoln Park.

About Arbor Day
St. Charles proudly sponsors this annual observance as a certified Tree City. St. Charles has been named a Tree City USA eleven times by the Arbor Day foundation to honor its commitment to community forestry.  St. Charles has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance.

The first Arbor Day was held in 1872 after J. Sterling Morton, father of Morton Arboretum founder Joy Morton, proposed an annual holiday to plant trees on the windswept plains of Nebraska. Arbor Day is now celebrated in all fifty states and in many other countries around the world.

If you would like to get in touch with the City's Tree Commission to discuss ways you can help, please contact the Public Works office at 377-4405 or email Ben Deutsch at bdeutsch@stcharlesil.gov.
